Inkspell by Cornelia Funke

I am reading Inkspell by Cornelia Funke.  It is the second one in the series.  There is also Inkheart which is the first and Inkdeath which is the last.  It is about a girl named Meggie whose father can read things out and in to books.  This means that Meggie's father could say a person's name and a place in a sentence and the person would go into a book to that place.  When Meggie was very young, her father got a book named Inkheart.  He was reading it to her mother one night and suddenly three people came out of the book--a person named Capricorn, who is a leader of a group of evil people that are called the Fire raisers that light fires and burn down people's houses; Basta, a person with a very sharp knife; and Dustfinger, a fire dancer who can talk to fires and make them do what he says.  Dustfinger is not evil.  I do not know why he came into our world too.

Meggie's mother, Teresa, disappeared into the book.  The rule of coming in and going out is that someone has to go to the other world in order for someone from that world to come here.  Meggie was only three when this happened so she didn't remember, but when Dustfinger arrives one rainy night, and tells her the story, her whole life changes.

My Rating: 9 owls (out of 10)

  1. Someday you'll need to try the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. If I remember correctly Thursday is a literary sleuth who can go into a book, usually a famous one, to root out characters that are hiding in a story and not welcome there. - Jeff

  2. Wow, now I want to know what happens in this new book, Inkspell. Please keep us updated. It sounds like a truly magical plot with lots of new ways to think about things we take for granted.

  5. Hi Athena! Thanks for the review of Inkspell. If you could go into a book which book would you want to enter? And, if you could have characters come out of the book and enter your world, who would you like to meet?
